Piriápolis.
It is welcoming and small, with hills surrounding it and almost entering
into the sea they are the unmistakable mark of the village. Its ravine
presents a deep European style .
The visitors who want to pass their vacations in an eddy of peace, next to
the sea, but in close contact with the regional flora and the fauna , have
nothing more advisable that the spa of Piriápolis, located at 100
kilometers of Montevideo, and only 30 kilometers of Punta del Este . It is
an attractive bay surrounded by forest hills, forming an open coastal
horseshoe, which accompanies the urban development of the most traditional
coastal city of the country. |
 |
In 1930 this city was distinguished with
the construction of an elegant hotel that today, rejuvenated and endowed
with modern services still shines splendid: the Argentino and Casino. It
pioneered in offering tourism of health, with baths of marine thermal
water and Rumanian therapies for revitalization and beauty.
Simplicity and cordiality of residents and lenders of tourist services are
attributes appreciated by the foreign visitor. The landscape beauty added
to the diverse possibilities to make different walks and sport, social and
cultural activities, attract regional people to Piriápolis, where the
whole year is high season thanks to the health offer .
From the top of its neighboring hills one can appreciate a full vision of
this small city that climbs the hillsides and the sensation of being
owners of all the tranquility of the planet what keeps intact some of the
works and constructions of the belle époque. The great and luxurious hotel
had a deserved coastal ravine on its front, the same that today
practically without modifications constitutes the classic summer walk . At
the hills summits monuments and miradors installed by the founder of this
bath town still remain. In spite of being these values interesting for the
tourist they are only complements in the global offer of rest, escape of
the stress, corporal and mental health. The warm sands and the refreshing
sea complete another part of that important mission in the family summers.
Costa de oro ( Coast of gold ) .
It changes the hills for the trees. But it maintains the same white sands
surrounded by forests in which the sun filters through the pines and eucalyptuses. It located at scarce kilometers of Montevideo.
It is called Costa de Oro to the coast of the Plate river in the
department of Canelones . Along these coasts extends a chain of spas that
have been growing with the pass of the years, until becoming another
tourist attractiveness that the foreign visitor can enjoy in Uruguay . The
Costa de Oro opens up as a fan that extends from the exit of Montevideo
until the Arroyo Solís, entrance door to the department of Maldonado. The
long rosary of beaches of white sands, with calm waters or not, as it is
preferred, are extremely enjoyable.
They are sixty eight kilometers where
more than thirty spas open up among sand and trees that fight sturdily
against the dunes and the wind. The forestation of the coastal stripe that
took place before the urbanization gives the travelers the sensation of a
warm atmosphere of peace and tranquility. For those who prefer the noise
they can find all the required services in the more urbanized centers as
Solymar, Lagomar, Atlantida , Costa Azul or La Floresta, included a
Casino, where they can try their luck . This coastal area has been the
providential expansion for thousands of montevideanos that built in this
area their weekend and vacations houses, and later decided their permanent
residence in the welcoming area that reached this way a population
growth of unusual characteristics seen in the development of services in
all fields.
The Costa de Oro could be divided in areas of different characteristic;
the first area is the most populated one since many people have preferred
the peace in these spas instead of the bustle of the capital. Until the
Solís stream where the spa El Pinar is located (kilometer 29th of the
Interbalnearia highway), the services are multiple and the traffic
continuous. Not far from Montevideo , distant 20 kilometers away the
tourist can accede to these beaches with excellent highways, and can enjoy
one afternoon or the whole season.
From the kilometer 34th to the spa of Costa Azul in the kilometer 57th ,
opens up a stripe distant from the capital ready to fill the longings of
those who like the tranquility, having the appropriate infrastructure
available , the tourist can visit : Pinamar, Salinas, Marindia, Fortín de
Santa Rosa, Atlantida, Parque del Plata , Las Toscas, La Floresta and
Costa Azul , the very heart of Costa of Oro . These spas were born
fundamentally because of the traffic influence from Canelones , Minas and
all the cities and adjacent towns. Agricultural, industrial producers and
neighboring merchants, gave their generous effort in the conformation of
this beautiful area. In Costa de Oro the tourist will find numerous and
very well mounted campings, restaurants, hotels and all type of services.
Finally eastward of the department are located other spas that - without
neglecting the services - are characterized to have more rural vegetation,
surrounded by pines and eucalyptuses. Stand out: Bello Horizonte
(especially for those who like of the surf ), San Luis, Los Titanes , La
Tuna, Araminda, Santa Lucía del Este with its meek beaches and fishing,
Cuchilla Alta , with its ravines on the sea, Jaureguiberry in the
departmental limit in the kilometer 81st. and Balneario Solís, already in
the Department of Maldonado .
Other coasts.
Montevideo , the Capital of Uruguay , shines for its beaches , free of all
contamination. The traditional walk of the montevideanos is to go down to
the beach, to go for a walk along the ravine carrying the hot water thermo
and the mate (the classical and traditional south American infusion )
keeping a long chatting .
Montevideo.
The capital of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay is a city open to the sea.
It is located strategically on the estuary of the Rio de la Plata and it
faces to the South Atlantic. The city was founded between 1726 and 1730 by
Bruno Mauricio of Zabala as a stronghold and establishment of thirteen Canarian
families , it remained trapped during the colonial time behind protectors
walls until the end of that period when the walls were demolished and the
urban area was extended due to the pressure of new European migratory
currents, what resulted in the tracing of new avenues, lifting of
important constructions and the increasing the number of plantations and
gardens. Therefore Montevideo acquired a European profile that it maintains
until the present days .
Until the stream Carrasco that
establishes the geographical limit between Montevideo and the department
of Canelones, it extends along a distance of 20 kilometers an
uninterrupted succession of beaches that offer a panoramic view of
enjoyment for the tourist. The first indications of that beauty begin from
the beach Ramirez bordering the Parque Rodó in which the building of the
Parque Hotel maintains its old but worthy appearance. The landscapes
continues with the beach Pocitos located in a privileged area of
Montevideo with a succession of towers almost reaching the sky and
entering the sea; the next beach is the Buceo (Diving) beach with its
sport port . On the marine horizon the silhouette of the island of Flowers
is observed inviting to the deep waters fishing , this place is frequently
visited by fishermen of local and international fishing clubs to promote
great competitions .The next point is Malvin where the air is purer and
free .Other beaches that complete this succession are Honda , playa de los
Ingleses (beach of the Englishmen) ,Verde ( Green) , la Mulata , and then
the angle in ascent on Punta Gorda urbanized with coquettish chalets
welcoming the walker from the heights . Finally we arrive to Carrasco
composed of the residential area , the clubs, the shopping centers , the
restaurants and culminating this brief dream trip is Miramar .
Colonia
Colonia del Sacramento is the capital of the Department of Colonia, this
city was founded in 1680 by Manuel Lobo and it represents one of the most
important appeals for the tourist that arrive to Uruguay. Due to its
Portuguese origin the city appearance is different to the classic trace of
the old cities of the Plate river (or Río de la Plata in Spanish ) .
Several outstanding beaches are : Playa Sur (South Beach ) ,with fine
sands , it is ideal for the practice of nautical sports , flat and sure,
it extends for six kilometers until the mouse of the stream Rosario. The
Verde beach next to the port with a beautiful natural grove carpeted with
a pleasant grass and endowed with varied services for the full enjoyment
of the visitors. Colony has a port of international traffic which
concentrates the biggest entrance of tourists to the different points of
the country.
San José
San José , situated in the coastal section , is integrated within the
characteristics that generically are similar in the landscape of Uruguay,
the city has nevertheless several singular distinctions shared by other
ones in the Sierra de Mahoma (Mohammed's hill ) a true sea of stone
that extends in a stripe of 13 kilometers between the streams Mahoma Chico
and Coronilla , and the River San José. Among the tourist attractiveness
of the department it should be pointed out the coast on the Plate river ,
with the immense ravines with steep slope , white sands beaches and calm
waters, specially advised for families with children due to the lack of
strong waves . The panoramic beauty acquires very particular features also
in the landscapes linked to the rivers San José and Santa Lucía. In the
course of the first one there are lagoons that extend in vast spaces . The
area of the mouth of the River Santa Lucía into the Río de la Plata, is
of captivating beauty. The spa Kiyú at 45Kms. of San José's capital and
at 74 Kms. of Montevideo is a tourist attraction and it is situated
approximately in an extension of 5 Kms. in the area known as Barrancas de
Mauricio and San Gregorio that are part of the Plate river coast . The
Playa Pascual, crossing the Bocas de Cufré, is another beautiful spa in
the coast of the Plate river and it is 60 Kms. of San José's city.
Soriano.
Soriano is the last coastal department of the river Uruguay. It has around
nine thousand square kilometers. Its topography is even , divided by the
waters of the Bizcocho stream . A visit to the islands and streams of the
department on the costs of the Negro river takes the traveler to a
close contact with the nature. Hotels, gyms, covered swimming pools, tennis
and paddle courts , camping site in the Isla del Puerto , sport fishing
sites and soft sands beaches conform an appreciated and beautiful tourist
infrastructure . Inside the department stands out the beach Playa de
la Agraciada in the mouth of the Agraciada stream by the Route 21st. to
the south. Composed of fine sands of singular beauty. The beach is an
outstanding historical point, because there it took place the Landing of
the 33 Oriental patriots , the moment when began the fight for the
national Independence of Uruguay. A municipal camping site stays open
during the whole year. The spa "La Concordia" on the coast of
the Uruguay river concentrates the tourist preferences .
Río Negro .
It is the name of the west coast department that has the same name of the
extensive river that crosses the Uruguayan territory from the NE to the SW
ending in the river Uruguay. Along the coasts of the mighty Uruguay river
, every few kilometers there are beaches with fresh forests , endowed with
the necessary comforts. In Nuevo Berlin, the coasts of the river become
the beach El Sauzal, where motels, inns and all the comforts
characteristic of the immediate population are available . But the
greatest attraction is in the spa Las Cañas , at 8 kilometers of Fray
Bentos, an arch of sand that extends for almost 1 km. between the waters
of the Uruguay river and an indigenous forest formed by varied tree
species such as ceibos , sarandies, guayabos, myrtle, espinillos, talas
, laurels, coronillas , etc. In the end of the beach, the stream Las
Cañas flows into the Uruguay river , after crossing a vegetable gallery
formed mainly by canes of a surprising species .
Salto.
In the coast of the Uruguay river high ravines are appreciated in the
area of Piedra Alta , La Caballada and Arenitas Blancas. This area
presented one of the most singular phenomenon of the country, the water
jumps and in particular the Big Jump or Salto Grande . The Camping site,
the parks and beaches with their fishing clubs and their nautical posts ,
the coastal South and North avenues conform as a whole an enjoyable
contact with the nature that the city offers with profusion and charm. By
the Uruguay river it are located Las Cavas and Salto
Chico small beaches with numerous fishermen , and a camping site,
from here you can accede to the inn Ayuí.
Tacuarembó.
At 400 Kms. of Montevideo, is located the city of Tacuarembó, capital
of the department of the same name which has the biggest area compared to
the other19 ones that divide the Republic politically. Paso de los Toros
is the second city of Tacuarembó with such attractions as beaches and
fishing boats near the coast of the Negro river with beautiful inns and
nautical clubs . Another attraction to highlight is the river Tacuarembó
Chico at 4 Kilometers of the capital on the bridge Paso del Bote on the
mouth of the river Tacuarembó. This area is ideal for swimming in the
fresh river waters. The Chorro de Agua Fría (Jet of Cold Water) in the
hill Sierra de Tambores at 40 kilometers of the capital , the
Hydroelectric Dam (one of the main ones of the country) and Villa Ansina's
beautiful beaches are places of tourist attraction for those who decide to
visit this department. It is worth also to mention the renowned spa village
of San Gregorio de Polanco endowed with inns, municipal motels and an
extensive and beautiful beach.
Oceanic coast.
In the end is Rocha. The oceanic coasts of this department as the rest of
it are places where the nature is most vividly presented , plenty of
lagoons and smaller water mirrors , full of flora and fauna. Hundred of
kilometers of virgin beaches and places that invite to dream as Punta del
Diablo , Cabo Polonio, Valizas or the Bar of Chuy.
First level spas with international services like La Paloma, La Pedrera
and La Coronilla .
Land of big cattle extensions, palm surrounded lagoons , wild forests and
an uneven coast facing the Atlantic, Rocha presents itself prodigal in
virgin natural attractiveness .
The life lapses here in absolute freedom,
under burning suns during the summertime and the temperance of the
intermediate seasons . The landscape is a combination of rocky ravines
forming bays where the sea calms down and the stony walls that receive the
fury or the oceanic strength giving place to the eternally attractive show
of the big waves crashing against the rock. Where in the past years were
born population nuclei of scarce importance, now we find very hospitable
tourist centers. The main one is La Paloma, it is sheltered into a wide
bay and surrounded by high and ancient pine groves, it preserves the
charming features of its primitive conformation. With a suitable hotel
offer and good quantity of simple but comfortable houses, La Paloma has
the characteristic of spas without affectations neither sophistication,
that cover the growing demand of people escaping from hurries and
schedules.
The sight of the horizon with fishing
boats tell us that we are in the proximities of a village of seals .
Although all these costs are considered a fishing area due to their
remarkable abundance and variety of species, worthy of visiting , there is
another choice for the visitor who can enjoy several days in any of their
cottages in Punta del Diablo , dedicated to the shark handmade craftsmanship . The coast zigzags. Curious dunes rise up to 70 meters and
as they change their shape with the wind further on, in Cabo Polonio,
appears a lonely but beautiful landscape. Sands, dunes, and typical
regional horse carts without which it is impossible to arrive to certain
points. And, then, the colonies of marine seals intoning their choirs in
the rocks. Habitually the tourists visit the area of Rocha in search of
emotions, to enjoy the wild beauty of a rural environment , hardly
trafficked. It is not strange to walk long distances of very wide stripes
of white and soft sand, without reaching their end. But as nothing is
monotonous in that region, the coast awards the walker with rock variants
, refuges of meek water and minuscule towns everywhere .
Fortresses and strongholds of the colonial time, very well conserved and
transformed into museums, they are an expression of the times in which
Spaniards and Portuguese competed for the domain of the region of the
Plate river . Of those historical monuments, Santa Teresa's Fortress, on
the coast, is next to a park with thousands of centennial trees, exuberant vegetation , exotic birds and
swimming pools bordered of
flowers. The Fortín de San Miguel (San Miguel's Outpost ) , of drawbridge
type , is near the Brazilian frontier towards the interior. From the top an
enormous native forest is observed. The palm groves and the lagoons,
continue practically untouched by the man .
La pedrera .
At 240 kms of Montevideo, 110 of Punta del Este and 10 kilometers of La
Paloma, on a rocky cliff, evinces La Pedrera . A rural town beside the
ocean, here everything is calm, except for the sea. The old part of the
city is a testimony of a past of more than a hundred years: the bell of
the church covered of coral was exhumed from the bottom of the sea,
the porthole of a house and the palisade of another are vestiges of old
shipwrecks. It is a popular word of mouth that in this place are useless
the clocks and the mirrors (because you eat when you are hungry and you go
dressed as you are fancied to any place). La Pedrera is vacations for the
noise of the multitudes. Vacations to read a good book, to listen jazz in
the Social Club, to have a beer in a bar, to sit down in the Ravine to
watch the sea, to eat fish and fresh shellfish, or to eat lamb, to make
surf, to masquerade and to parade in Carnival, to go fishing , to walk for
hours along an almost deserted oceanic beach, to see whales... and to fill
one's sight with much blue and much green .
